Kerry: U.S. Does Not Oppose Europeans Arming Syria Rebels

The United States will not oppose moves by some European nations to arm Syrian rebels battling President Bashar Assad, top U.S. diplomat John Kerry said Monday.
"President (Barack) Obama has made it clear that the United States does not stand in the way of other countries that have made a decision to provide arms, whether it's France or Britain or others," Kerry told reporters.
EU leaders are due to meet this week to discuss easing an EU arms embargo, amid statements from Paris and London that it is time to start arming the Syrian opposition.
Obama "believes we need to change President Assad's calculation," Kerry said, after talks with his Australian counterpart Bob Carr.
Kerry reiterated that Obama "is evaluating and will continue to evaluate any additional options available in order to make that happen."
The United States has provided non-lethal and humanitarian aid to the Syrian opposition but refused to supply arms, fearful of pouring more weapons into a complex conflict now into its third year which has claimed some 70,000 lives.
"Assad is receiving help from the Iranians, he is receiving help from some al-Qaida related elements, he's receiving help from Hizbullah and obviously some help that is coming in through the Russians," Kerry said.
"If he believes he can shoot it out, Syrians and region have a problem, and the world has a problem."

If the US does not go to this war, with all the fanatics pouring in, this war is going to come to it. The US' aim should be to preserve what is left of Syria. That means trying to convince the people around Assad that their choice is between ruinous defeat and turfing out the Assad family as a prelude to talks with the rebels. A no-fly is needed to ground Assad’s air force and destroy some of his missiles. It should arm non-jihadist rebel groups—including with limited numbers of anti-aircraft missiles. There are no guarantees that this policy will work. But it will at least build links with the non-jihadist rebels whom America will need as allies in the chaos if Mr Assad stays.

2 years and they're still arguing about the method.... It took a few months in Libya or Mali. Another proof that Bashar is Israel's ally and that his replacement will be tough.

Don't comment under my comments please. I have a dissocacion policy towards M8 assassins. Thank you for understanding.

You are mistaken. It's not all about oil. If the fight drags on, Syria will degenerate into a patchwork of warring fiefs. Almost everything America wants to achieve in the Middle East will become harder. Containing terrorism, ensuring the supply of energy and preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction. About a fifth of the rebels—and some of the best organised—are jihadists. They pose a threat to moderate Syrians, including Sunnis, and they could use lawless territory as a base for international terror. Jordan, poor and fragile, will be destabilised by refugees and Islamists. Oil-rich, Shia-majority Iraq can barely hold itself together; as Iraqi Sunnis are drawn into the fray, divisions there will only deepen. Coping with the fallout from Syria, including Mr Assad’s arsenal of chemical weapons, could complicate the aim of preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear bomb. Mr Obama wanted to avoid Syria, but Syria will come and get him.

There are other parameters in the Syrian equation beside oil; the biggest danger to the West and to Syria alike is the rise of the jihadists. The US now has 2 reasons to intervene, one is to build links with the non-jihadist rebels whom America will need as allies whether Assad stays or not to ensure a pie in the future Syria, and two to start dealing with the jihadists before they grow stronger.

Here we go again, arming a group of fanatical thugs. Haven't the Americans learned their lesson by doing so? These scums they're trying to arm will use it against them once the Americans helped them achieve there goal.

I am not a war strategist, so I will refrain from analyzing what the world powers do or hoe they will get involved in Syria. I am not a political expert and hence will not indulge in analyzing the political fall-outs and the multitude of possible outcomes. But I am a Lebanese first and foremost and as such I urge all of you to take one united stand against any would be enemy of the State of Lebanon regardless of who the enemy is. If we do not close ranks we all will suffer the consequences.

All this means is that arming the opposition by the West (including Turkey) and the GCC will simply convert from covert to overt arming. Will it really make any difference except to raise the ante, cause more destruction and will be like a wildfire spreading to all surrounding countries.
May God have mercy on all and deliver the region from this disaster!!!!!!!!!

Gather these bastards along with our politicians and lock them in a farm house along the Syrian border. Then mark the roof top with a big X then stand back and let the Israelis or the Syrian airforce or even the American drones do the rest !!!! Don't arm them just blow them.... That's it finish.

Kerry don't arm anymore fanatics, it will burn you all later, just look what Iraq, Sudan , Yemen, Tunisia , Egypt, Afghanistan , Pakistan , are in at the moment because of your foreign policy!
