Tropical Storm Juliette has formed off the coast of Mexico and is threatening the tourist city of Cabo San Lucas, weather officials said.

As of 0600 GMT Thursday the storm was in the Pacific Ocean 95 miles (150 km) northwest of Cabo San Lucas and moving northwest at a speed of 23 mph (37 kph), the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Mexico said.

Maximum sustained winds are moving at nearly 50 mph (85 kph), with some gusts even stronger.

Mexico's National Weather Service predicted heavy rain, strong winds and big waves off the coast of Baja California.

Juliette is the 10th named storm of the season this year in the Pacific.

Some 5,000 people in Cabo San Lucas were told to move into shelters to seek protection from the bad weather.

Classes were suspended for Thursday in Baja California state.
