An Israeli official landed in Cairo on Sunday for Egypt-mediated truce talks with Hamas to end the Gaza conflict, Egyptian security officials said.

The official landed in a small plane at 1100 GMT and was quickly escorted away by intelligence personnel, the security officials said.

Pope Tawadros II was enthroned as the new leader of Egypt's Coptic Christian minority on Sunday in a ceremony at Cairo's St Mark's Cathedral attended by Prime Minister Hisham Qandil.

Tawadros, 60, was chosen on November 4 to succeed Pope Shenuda III, who died in March after four decades on the patriarchal throne.

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi called on his Argentine counterpart Cristina Kirchner to rally other Latin American leaders in support of stopping the violence in Gaza, Argentina said Saturday.

"The president of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Mohammed Morsi, contacted President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, to ask for her intervention, and through her the leaders of the region and the world, for an end of violence between Israel and the Palestinian faction Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip," the government said in a statement on its website.

Morsi Says Indications of Hamas-Israel Truce 'Soon'

Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi said on Saturday his government was in touch with both Israelis and Palestinians and there were indications they could "soon" reach a truce, but there were no guarantees.

"There are some indications that there could be a ceasefire soon," Morsi said at a joint news conference with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, adding that there were still "no guarantees."

Arab League Chief to Head Delegation to Gaza

Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi will head a delegation to Gaza in a show of solidarity after Arab ministers decided on Saturday to review their diplomacy towards Israel and show their support for the Palestinians.

Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal was in Cairo on Saturday to confer on ending the Gaza conflict but the Islamist group is reluctant to agree a ceasefire without guarantees Israel will honor it, a senior Hamas official said.

Meshaal was scheduled to meet with Egypt's intelligence chief as well as Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and Qatari Emir Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, both visiting Cairo, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
