Prime Minister Tammam Salam reiterated on Saturday the importance of internal unity in confronting the threat of terrorism.

He said after holding talks with Speaker Nabih Berri: “We need to stand united against terrorism and we should not grant terrorists the chance to create division among us.”

Several terrorists were killed and a number of others were wounded overnight after the army shelled their positions in the outskirts of the northeastern region of Arsal.

The army announced in a statement on Saturday that it had shelled the positions of terrorists on the outskirts of the town, making direct hits.

Minister of Social Affairs Rashid Derbas voiced apprehension on Saturday that international aid to Syrian refugees in Lebanon could dwindle down further after reports showed that it did, an Nahar daily reported.

“International aid to Syrian refugees has dwindled from 53% in 2013 to 40% at present. I fear that it could decrease further,” dreaded Derbas.

Three rockets landed Friday in the northern Bekaa region after being fired from the Eastern Mountain Range, which straddles both sides of the Lebanese-Syrian border.

“One of the rockets exploded over a secondary school in (the town of) al-Labweh as the other fell below the international highway that links northern Bekaa to Baalbek,” state-run National News Agency said.

The Qaida-linked al-Nusra Front on Friday said it executed captive Lebanese soldier Mohammed Hamiyeh, describing him as the “victim of the Lebanese army's intransigence.”

Turkey's state-run Anatolia news agency said it received a phone call from a Nusra leader in Syria's Qalamun, who confirmed that the group murdered Hamiyeh with several bullets.

An army checkpoint was attacked by a hand grenade on Friday in Tripoli, only hours after a roadside bomb targeted an army vehicle and killed two troops in the Bekaa border town of Arsal.

"An unknown assailant riding a motorbike hurled a hand grenade towards an army checkpoint in the al-Omari area in Tripoli's Syria Street,” state-run National News Agency reported.
