Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun held talks on Saturday with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Syria on Lebanese developments and efforts aimed at ending the tensions between the various Lebanese sides, reported the Syrian News Agency, SANA.

The efforts are aimed at guaranteeing Lebanon's stability and security and bolster understanding between the Lebanese, it reported.

MP Oqab Saqr stressed on Saturday that the Saudi-Syrian safety net is aimed at preventing an explosion on the internal Lebanese scene, but it is not aimed at addressing every single statement that is issued.

"We believe that this net serves Lebanon's interest first and foremost, which lifts a great burden off the Lebanese's shoulders," he told the daily Asharq al-Awsat.

Lebanon can do without armed clashes similar to those of May 7, 2008 and the recent remarks of former head of General Security, Maj. Gen. Jamil Sayyed, and Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun "are rejected," Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat said Thursday.

In an interview with LBC TV, Jumblat said that "the presumptions presented" by Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon were "very important," noting that "the tribunal's issue can be solved between (Premier Saad)Hariri and Nasrallah, so there's no need to topple it (STL) through street" riots.
