Turkish photographer Bunyamin Aygun has disappeared in neighboring Syria while covering the civil war there, his newspaper said on Tuesday.

"We haven't received any news from our journalist, who was on a reporting mission, for more than two weeks," an official from the Milliyet newspaper told Agence France Presse.

His fate and whereabouts are not known but some media outlets said he had been kidnapped by al-Qaida affiliates in Syria.

Rights groups describe Syria as the world's most dangerous country from which to report.

Twenty-five journalists have been killed since the start of the conflict in March 2011, according to Reporters Without Borders (RSF), while more than 30 journalists are estimated to have been abducted or detained.

The al-Qaida-affiliated Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) is believed to be holding several foreign journalists, as well as scores of Syrian activists.
