Phalange Warns of Naturalization of Syrian Refugees in Lebanon

The Phalange Party called on the government on Monday to carefully follow up on the flow of Syrian refugees into Lebanon, warning of a “new form of naturalization” facing the country.

It said in a statement after its weekly politburo meeting: “A crisis committee should be formed to address the possible repercussions of the Syrian unrest on Lebanon.”

It criticized some authorities’ handling of the refugee issue, “which has started to take on a dramatic security and humanitarian turn.”

Addressing the Syrian crisis, the Phalange Party called on all Lebanese factions to maintain the country’s internal unity and “refrain from taking to the street in protest or in support” of the developments in Syria.

On Sunday, a demonstration in support of the Syrian people and another in support of the Syrian regime was staged in downtown Beirut amid fears that the rival rallies could take a violent turn.

The protests took place without incident.

On the dispute between the March 8 and 14 camps over government extra-budgetary spending, the Phalange Party politburo stressed the need for all concerned sides to agree on a mechanism that would be adopted on spending.

The meeting also tackled party chief Amin Gemayel’s trip to Italy last week where he held talks with a number of officials, including President Giorgio Napolitano.

The Kataeb are against naturalizing these UNLESS they join their 3-member party.

The title of this article is not appropriate. In the body of the article there is no mention of naturalization at all. Title is irrelevant and should be changed.

Not only Bashar's regime is a problem to Lebanon. Anything have to do with the whole region is a problem for Lebanon.

I don't care what anyone says. We speak the same language eat the same food so if they get citizenship so what? Armenians got citizenship so why shouldn't the Syrians? Or the Palestinians for that matter? The Palestinians have been here for sixty years, it is about time they get citizenship and rights.

your argument has no logic at all.. u wanna give ppl citizenship on the basis that they eat the same food?! i eat hamburger and speak english maybe they should give me the american citizenship. When the Armenians got citizenship things were different, admit it or not Armenians affected positively to both he economy and the balance of things during that period.. Whereas the Palestinians destroyed their chances of getting support of turning citizens when they held arms to fight against the Lebanese.. should they get their basic right...Yes sure they should!

Lol, it was only a matter of time before phalanges reminded us of their racism and disregard towards the Syrian people. Their act of caring about the plight of the "Syrian people" lasted only a few months.

Naturalization of Syrian refugees: why not!? But mass naturalization is a definite NO! But we must harbour and protect them from the Syrian dictatorship.

Thumb Chupachups 06 March 2012, 09:31

prime suspect.. please think logically.. NO naturalization no matter what.

Thumb kesrweneh 06 March 2012, 12:55

let a big wealthy country naturalize them, we can't even provide for our own citizens

Missing ulpianus 05 March 2012, 23:20

eh? What about Armenian naturalization? The Phalange is nothing but Facsists.

Thumb Chupachups 07 March 2012, 11:02

Armenians deserve to be naturalized, they have rarely created problems for Lebanon

Thumb jcamerican 06 March 2012, 17:02

Before you naturalize the Syrians who just got in. How about the Palestinians? Why would anyone talk about granting them citizenship at this time, unless Syria went underwater or need the numbers in Lebanon for voting purposes.

hey ulpianus, what Armenian naturalization..Armenians were born in Lebanon and they are all Lebanese..but you make a good point, you are right, everybody was naturalized after 1945...and if we follow your theory, that means all Lebanese are naturalized..

Thumb Chupachups 07 March 2012, 11:03

jc america, why don't u take the palestinians to america?

in lebanon we have enough, our bags are full... if you know what i mean.

Thumb jcamerican 07 March 2012, 14:03

Would they accept is the question. Plenty of free land.
