Syria Opposition Demands Ban on Regime Air Power

Syria's opposition demanded on Sunday that the international community impose a ban on the Damascus regime's use of its air power in urban areas, in addition to its chemical weapons.

"The Syrian National Coalition insists that the prohibition of chemical weapons, the use of which has left more than 1,400 civilians dead, be extended to the use of ballistic missiles and aircraft against urban areas," it said in a statement.

The bloc did not comment directly on a landmark U.S.-Russian deal reached Saturday on eliminating Syria's chemical weapons, which has been denounced by its military chief, General Selim Idriss.

But it said that Damascus' acceptance of the Russian initiative to dismantle its chemical stockpiles could be explained by "the fear of a military strike.”

The National Coalition recognized the need to "seize this opportunity to halt the regime's campaign against residential areas and to end the suffering of the Syrian people."

In addition to banning the use of the regime's aerial threat, it called for the resurrection of a plan to move heavy weaponry away from populated areas and to ban their use against cities, towns and villages.

"We should not allow the Syrian regime to use its accession to the Chemical Weapons Convention as an excuse to continue killing Syrian people and escape punishment," said the statement.

"Securing the regime's chemical weapons must be accompanied by a search for justice with the perpetrators of the chemical weapons attacks brought before the International Criminal Court."

The Coalition also asked its Arab and international supporters to strengthen the opposition's military capabilities.

This would enable it to "neutralize" the regime's air power and heavy armor and force President Bashar Assad to end his military campaign and accept a political solution to guarantee a democratic transition, it added.

LOL, sa7 il nom FSA-Al Qaeda. You were sold for scraps a long time ago. All those innocent and unarmed civilians you massacred and places of worship that you've ruthlessly pillaged and attacked has not impressed anybody and will not change anything. The Syrian people will make you pay a very heavy price for your terrorism.

lol as if they were in position to "demand" anything. they were offered a chance to negotiate, they didnt want, they chose to fight to the end causing all the chaos death and suffering we see in syria. now they have to pay.

we have people who believe they are the reincarnation of Einstein making political analysis.
The west gave up on the rebels.. hmm weapons are starting to come in directly from the U.S. AND France.. with Britain not far behind.. but what this reincarnation derived from this is that the west gave up on them.
Russia choke slammed Assad by MAKING him give up his chemical weapons, the biggest deterrent he had (the SAA being a joke) all in favor of the USA AND Israel who have been calling for them for years.. but these reincarnations think the west gave up on the rebels..
what jokes.

Thumb arzak-ya-libnan 16 September 2013, 09:22

thats absolutely fine with me if they dont... i am not betting that they would..in fact i HOPE and PRAY they backtrack... but way to go coming up with a figment of your imagination to argue solid facts about what is going on...

Just as Judas Iscariot sold Jesus for 30 worthless coins of silver, The Great Satan aka as the Useless States of America imprinted the kiss of betrayal on the rosy cheeks of Salim Idriss, commander in chief of the FSA (Fat Syrian Army) and his cannibalistical followers. What has been achieved by President Asssad and Sayyid Hasanallah, was nothing short of political magic and wizardry. The Islamic Iranian Resistance considers those Sunni Takfiris to be more of any enemy than the zionist state who was born in sin and out of holy wedlock. We the Shia of Ali Ibn Taleb and the faithful of the Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Kamanei will not rest until all those terrorists and their sponsors have been eliminated. Karbalaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa !

I agree with haile. If Assad was going to use Chemical, he would have done it big, and used it in a way that would have helped advance regime territory.

Thumb _mowaten_ 15 September 2013, 16:17

yep. troops had been advancing on most fronts, it was completely senseless to use chemicals. the only possible achievement of that move would have been to cause a foreign intervention. who would have profited from it?

Thumb scorpyonn 15 September 2013, 20:48

You are so brainwashed by your Iranian masters you ignorant fool!

Thumb lebnanfirst 16 September 2013, 00:03

@zahle1
That is not how the likes of Assad operate. Make no mistake had he used them in a large scale operation he would have given the West a cases belli to immediately pounce on him militarily and end his rule for sure. He is a dictator but that does not make him stupid.
He tested the waters about a dozen times with small scale chemical attacks and when he saw the muted response from the West he thought he can get away with a significantly agree deployment of CW. As usual, he miscalculated badly and Russia rushed to his aid out of self interest when it was certain that US armed intervention was real and imminent.
While other spin analysis of the circumstances make some feel good, the fact remains Assad opted for CW use because he was unable to subdue the rebels. If he were, he would not have needed the I fervent ion of HA, would he?

Cases == casus

Thumb lebnanfirst 16 September 2013, 00:05

The I fervent ion == armed intervention

FSA opposition needs to formally do something about the Christian villages in Syria being ransacked, where there are no weapons and military. I mean this is really hurting their credibility across the world that they are supposedly a legitimate opposition, but do such cowardly, and horrific things. Shame on them for asking and demanding anything until they get some control and organization.

Thumb fero 15 September 2013, 15:29

these guys are so pathetic after they failed to orce a military intervention on Syria they are know grabbing at straws trying to have some sort of moral victory they are so stupid and they have the nerve too ask for a political solution even though the regime requested to meet with them and they denied it because he is still in power these guys are sinking fast so good luck
