Interesting comments... Why only Alawites/Shia? How about supporters of the Assad regime that are from other religions? And if some of those refugees are committing crimes against the Syrian people will they be handed over to the international court if asked?... or will Israel put itself at odds with its Sunni neighbors?
I wonder if this is just the General playing politician and wanting to portray himself as a great humanitarian or if the statements hints to a deeper relationship between the Baath regime in Syria, the mullahs in Iran and Israel. If it is the former than the General should consider adding a PR person to his staff :) and if it is the latter, well, Israel’s image and standing in the Arab street is sure to sink lower and put any existing peace treaty in jeopardy; But on the positive side, it does indicate that the regime in Syria is preparing its exit.

If you read between the lines, he is saying let us have a better reason to keep the Golan Heights under our occupation and keep tensions between Syria and Israel
